The term nutraceutical combines two words – nutrient (a nourishing food component) and pharmaceutical (a medical drug). It was coined in 1989 by Stephen DeFelice, founder and chairman of the Foundation for Innovation in Medicine, an American organization located in New Jersey (USA).
Numerous nutraceuticals are successfully used worldwide and have proven to be
clinically effective. As a result, they have attracted the attention of the scientific community and of physicians and the sector has grown remarkably over the past few years.
These substances often work better when administered in a single formula because the active ingredients’ action is amplified by combining their respective properties.
